On Monday, June 4th our disaster workers assisted 15 residents of The Landings at Forest Acres on Covenant Road after an apartment fire damaged their homes. In total, one unit was completely destroyed and six other units were affected.
We provided aid to eight adults and seven children in the form of financial assistance to purchase food and clothing. In addition, we provided each family with temporary lodging and hygiene kits filled with basic items such as a tooth brush, soap and shampoo. The children also received stuffed animals for a sense of security and safety.
“I am glad that the Red Cross was here today and every day,” said Chief Mark Wright, Columbia-Richland Fire Department. “Their work is very important to our community. They always provide comfort and aid to individuals that have lost everything to a disaster and help them get back on their feet.”
Since July 1, 2011, the local Red Cross has responded to over 1,040 disasters and has provided immediate emergency assistance to approximately 3,580 adults and children.
